Colonel (Col) Thomas E. Schuurmans is the Director of the Joint Staff and Army Chief of Staff for the Nebraska Army National Guard.

Col Schuurmans’ military education includes the Medical Service Corps Officer Basic Course, Initial Entry Rotory Wing Flight School, Aviation Officers Advanced Course, Combined Arms & Services Staff School, Command and General Staff College, Fixed Wing Multi-engine Qualification Course, and the US Army War College.

Col Schuurmans enlisted as a private into the South Dakota Army National Guard in March of 1979 as a combat engineer assigned to Company D, 153rd Engineer Battalion. Col Schuurmans was commissioned a Second Lieutenant July 26, 1981 at the South Dakota Military Academy and has had the following assignments: Medical Clearing Company Platoon Leader in South Dakota, assigned to the Nebraska Army National Guard July 1983 and served as Section Leader, Maintenance Officer, Flight Operations Officer (deployed to Operation Desert Storm), and Commander 24th Medical Company (Air Ambulance) as well as Commander 110th Medical Evacuation Battalion. His full-time National Guard AGR career assignments prior to assuming duties as Chief of Staff include Medical Recruiter, State Training Specialist, Marksmanship Coordinator, Operations & Training Officer and Executive Officer 92d Troop Command, Supervisory Aircraft Instructor Pilot, Director of Army Aviation & Safety and Commander, Army Aviation Support Facility, and Deputy Chief of Staff for Operations. Most recently Col Schuurmans Commanded the 1st INF BDE (ETT) and the Regional Corps Advisory Group of the 203rd Corps supporting Operation Enduring Freedom in Afghanistan.

Col Schuurmans has earned Master Army Aviator Wings, Combat Medical Badge, and the Combat Action Badge.

Col Schuurmans, the youngest son of Maxine and the late Virgil Schuurmans, was born April 5, 1961 in Tyndall, South Dakota. He graduated from Tyndall-Tabor High School in 1979 and went on to receive a Bachelor of Arts in HR from Doane College, a Masters of Science in Administration degree from Central Michigan University, and a Master of Strategic Studies from the US Army War College.

He and his wife Beth have two children, Kaitlin and Race. They currently reside in Lincoln, NE.
